I'd
like to tell you about Dignan the Bernese Mountain Dog. If you are
not familiar with this gentle breed you are missing one of the great
joys of life - simply knowing a Berner (as they are referred to) is
a joy unparalleled. Dignan was purchased at a dog auction in Missouri
in order to prevent him from becoming puppy mill breeding stock by
the volunteers at BARC, Inc. The Bernese Mountain Dog Auction Rescue
Coalition. The photo here is of Dignan the day they rescued him from
auction - he still has his lot number on! If you are interested in
acquiring a Berner please be well informed about its origins and thouroughly
check out the breeder. Contacting your local Bernese Mountain Dog
Club is an excellent way to get in touch with respected breeders in
your area.
Making Progress
BARC has rescued hundreds of Berners over the past couple of years
and the numbers seen at the auctions have been going down. The prices
for puppies at the auctions and at the pet stores are being reduced
greatly. These unscrupulous people are having a hard time making
a profit off of the Bernese Mountain Dog thanks to BARC rescues
and the national and local Bernese Mountain Dog Clubs' education
efforts. They seem to really making progress in preserving the dignity
and health of this breed.
